- THE DEATH OF THE OLD PLYMOUTH ROCK HEN
It was tragic when her time came
After a lifetime of laying brown eggs
Among the white of leghorns.
Now, unattractive to the rooster,
Laying no more eggs,
Faking it on other hens' nests,
Caught in the act,
Taken to the woodpile
In the winter of execution.
A quick stroke of the axe,
One first and last upward cast
Of eyes that in life
Had looked only down,
Scanning the ground for seeds and worms
And for the shadow of the hawk.
Now those eyes are covered
By yellow lids,
Closing from the bottom up.
Decapitated, she did not act
Like a chicken with its head cut off.
No pirouettes, no somersaults,
No last indignity.
Like an English queen, she died.
On wings that had never known flight.
She flew, straight into the woodpile,
And there beat out slow death
While her curdled voice ran out in blood.
A scalding and a plucking of no purpose.
No goose feathers for a comforter.
No duck's down for a pillow.
No quill for a pen.
In the opened body, no entrail message for the haruspex.
Not one egg of promise in the oviduct.
In the gray gizzard, no diamond or emerald,
But only half-ground corn,
Sure evidence of unprofitability.
The breast and legs,
The wings and thighs,
The strong heart,
The pope's nose,
Fit only for chicken soup and stew.
And then in March, near winter's end,
When bloodied and feathered wood is used,
The odor of burnt offerings
Above the kitchen stove.

- Nowadays chickens are raised in large scale modern farms where
they cannot walk, run or seek food in the soil. They are fed
soleby by humans. They are kept in small cages and cannot move
at all. Day and night they have to stand. Imagine that you have no right to walk or to run. Imagine that you have to stay day and night in just one place. You would become mad. So the chickens
become mad. In order for the chickens to produce more eggs, the farmers create artificial days and nights. They use indoor lighting to create a shorter day and a shorter night so that the chickens believe that 24 hours have passed and then they produce more eggs. There is a lot of anger, a lot of frustration and much suffering in the chickens. They express their anger and frustration by attacking the chickens next to them. They use their beaks to peck and wound each other. They cause each other to bleed, to suffer and to die. That is why farmers now cut the beaks off all the chickens to prevent them from attacking each other out of frustration. So when you eat the flesh or egg of such a chicken you are eating anger and frustration. If you eat anger, you will become and express anger.
- The sea is calm tonight.
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits - on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.
Sophocles long ago
Heard it on the Aegean, and it brought
Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow
Of human misery; we
Find also in the sound a thought,
Hearing it by this distant northern sea.
The Sea of Faith
Was once, too, at the full, and round earth's shore
Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.
But now I only hear
Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,
Retreating, to the breath
Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world.
Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.

- It's August, and out my back window,
I can see a little girl -- seven, maybe --
kissing bees, in her mother's garden.
She laughs wildly after every kiss;
after every kiss she licks her lips
and wipes them on her wrist.
Her mother calls out from the
kitchen window: Kathleen Elizabeth!
I'm not telling you again! Stop kissing
those bees! You're gonna get stung!
Kathleen Elizabeth pouts and stares
wantonly at her bees in the blossoms.
She seems enthralled by the buzzing
throng. I wonder if she knows
that, in Brittany, generations believed
the tears Christ shed on the cross
turned into bees, that according
to Mohammed the bee is the only
creature that God ever spoke to directly,
that according to Herodotus, kings
of Scythia were buried in beeswax.
Maybe she was once chosen,
having lived a former life
in the Far East, where bees are believed
to impart eloquence to a child
of their choice. Maybe she intuits,
somehow, that when Plato, Sophocles,
and Xenophon were infants, bees
alighted on their mouths. She must
know something, because, now,
she is singing to the bees, as people
in England used to do, to keep their bees
at home and happy. And, now, I can hear
the thoughts that incite her desire,
that arrive on the breeze, as the whole
luminous day around her --
and around me -- seems to whisper:
Kiss the bees! Kiss the bees!

There is no magic stone.
No secret to be found.

The balls set for the final break.

Shaken for the last cast.
The glove has been thrown to the ground,
The last choice of weapons made.

Turns mine to wax.
And I am dumb to mouth unto my veins
How at the mountain spring the same mouth sucks.
The hand that whirls the water in the pool
Stirs the quicksand; that ropes the blowing wind
Hauls my shroud sail.
And I am dumb to tell the hanging man
How of my clay is made the hangman's lime.
The lips of time leech to the fountain head;
Love drips and gathers, but the fallen blood
Shall calm her sores.

How time has ticked a heaven round the stars.
And I am dumb to tell the lover's tomb
How at my sheet goes the same crooked worm.

- Islam is a word which denotes not a particular religion but a state
of mind, the state of total surrender to the Will of God. Islam means dedication, surrender, peace, tranquility. Islam denotes the social community whose members have achieved supreme peace through surrender to the All-merciful, All-powerful God and who have vowed to live in peace with their fellowmen. Later, it came to be applied to communities that considered themselves separate and different and so hostile to the rest. Islam taught something higher. It directed attention to the One in the Many, the unity in diversity and led people to the Reality named God.

- THE TUFT OF FLOWERS
I went to turn the grass once after one
Who mowed it in the dew before the sun.
The dew was gone that made his blade so keen
Before I came to view the levelled scene.
I looked for him behind an isle of trees;
I listened for his whetstone on the breeze.
But he had gone his way, the grass all mown,
And I must be, as he had been -- alone,
'As all must be,' I said within my heart,
'Whether they work together or apart.'
But as I said it, swift there passed me by
On noiseless wing a bewildered butterfly,
Seeking with memories grown dim o'er night
Some resting flower of yesterday's delight.
And once I marked his flight go round and round,
As where some flower lay withering on the ground.
And then he flew as far as eye could see,
And then on tremulous wing came back to me.
I thought of questions that have no reply,
And would have turned to toss the grass to dry;
But he turned first, and led my eye to look
At a tall tuft of flowers beside a brook,
A leaping tongue of bloom the scythe had spared
Beside a reedy brook the scythe had bared.
The mower in the dew had loved them thus,
By leaving them to flourish, not for us,
Nor yet to draw one thought of ours to him.
But from sheer morning gladness at the brim.
The butterfly and I had lit upon,
Nevertheless, a message from the dawn,
That made me hear the wakening birds around,
And hear his long scythe whispering to the ground,
And feel a spirit kindred to my own,
So that henceforth I worked no more alone;
But glad with him, I worked as with his aid,
And weary, sought at noon with him the shade;
And dreaming, as it were, held brotherly speech
With one whose thought I had not hoped to reach.
'Men work together,' I told him from the heart,
'Whether they work together or apart.'
(The Tuft Of Flowers was included in a 1929
collection of the world's most famous poems).
- When the skies are a bright canary yellow
I forget every cloud I've ever seen,
So they called me a cockeyed optimist
Immature and incurably green.
I have heard people rant and rave and bellow
That we're done and we might as well be dead,
But I'm only a cockeyed optimist
And I can't get it into my head.
I hear the human race
Is fallin' on its face
And hasn't very far to go,
But every whippoorwill
Is sellin' me a bill,
And tellin' me it just ain't so.
I could say life is just a bowl of Jello*
And appear more intelligent and smart,
But I'm stuck like a dope
With a thing called hope,
And I can't get it out of my heart!
Not this heart...

- God is not a separate entity. Humankind is the image of God. Daivam
maanusha rupena, declare the scriptures. It means that God appears in human form. God has no separate form. It is to show to humanity how human life can be divinized that Avatars come from time to time. />
I have often declared that God does not come down as avatar to relieve individuals of their troubles and sorrows and to confer joy and happiness on them. Difficulties, troubles and worries come in the natural course as a consequence of past actions. The Gita says: Karmaanubandhini manushya loke (Human beings are bound by Karma in the world). As human birth is the result of Karma, there can be no escape form the consequences of Karma. As is your action, so is the reaction to it.
